Importante conferenza scientifica del Prof. Nicola De Filippis presso la British University in Egypt

Nel quadro della attività di collaborazione internazionale tra Italia ed Egitto, il giorno 12 Luglio 2017 si terrà, presso la British University in Egypt, una importante conferenza scientifica del Prof. Nicola De Filippis del Politecnico di Bari ed Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, il quale riassumerà le recenti esperienze condotte sulla scoperta del bosone di Higgs e sulle nuove verifiche sperimentali. Il prof De Filippis lavora difatti da molti anni su tali tematiche, anche in collaborazione con i colleghi egiziani della suddetta università. Title:
“The discovery of the Higgs boson and the latest results with the CMS experiment at the LHC”

Abstract:
The discovery of a new particle with a mass of about 125 GeV in July 2012 by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC shed light on the existence of a Higgs boson such as the one predicted by the Higgs mechanism within the Standard Model. That discovery brought to the Nobel prize awarded in October 2013 to the theorists P. Higgs and F. Englert that elaborated the theoretical mechanism to give masses to fermions and gauge bosons and predicted the existence of a scalar particle.
The analysis of data collected by the CMS experiment at a collision energy of 13 TeV for the Run 2 in 2015 and 2016 provided confirmation of the existence of that particle and all the measurements about its properties were found consistent with the Standard Model predictions. In addition the Run 2 data analysis opened a wide scenario for searches for physics beyond Standard Model, profiting from the large increase of parton luminosities at 13 TeV center of mass energy with respect to 8 TeV so enhancing the production of heavy particles (with a mass of few TeV). No relevant excesses were found after analyzing 2015 and 2016 data but the search for physics beyond the Standard Model has just started and will definitely benefit from the larger data samples that CMS is now collecting in 2017 and will collect in 2018.
The seminar will focus on the discovery of the the Higgs boson and on the latest results about the Higgs sector of the Standard Model, by using data collected by the CMS experiment until now. Particular emphasis will be given also to hints of new physics in the context Beyond Standard Model experimental searches.
