The Italian Embassy in Cairo

The Embassy is located in Garden City, an historical district of Cairo near the east side of the Nile and it has been built in 1929 as residence of the Kingdom of Italy’s diplomatic mission at that time.

Along with our Consulate located in Boulaq, the embassy is among the oldest diplomatic missions in Cairo.

The Quarter of Consular Section

Boulaq in the 19th century

The Consular Section in Cairo is located in the Boulaq quarter, one of the oldest nothern quarters of Cairo. The word Boulaq comes from the French beau lac, while in Coptic boulaq means pond.
Under the reign of the Mamlukes, Boulaq became an important commercial port, while in the 19th century the quarter became the center of Muhammad Ali's effort to develop a modem industrial infrastructure: factories, warehouses, and Egypt's first printing press were established there.
Today Boulaq is still a commercial quarter, with plenty of small business enterprises and craftsmen shops.

The Building

Today, the building of Boulaq houses the Consular Section in Cairo, the Italian International School "Leonardo Da Vinci", the Italian Institute Dante Alighieri, a branch of the Italian Institute of Culture in Cairo and the Italian Recreation Club (C.R.I.).
