News about the Consulate of Alexandria (Egypt)The General Consulate of Italy in Alexandria has jurisdiction in the northern part of the country; from the western borders with Libya to the north of Sinai. In the southern part of the country, from the extreme northern periphery of Cairo till the included city of Ismailiyya. The oasis of Siwa is also in such competence. Due to its previous depending on the Governorate of Zagazig, also the town of 10th of Ramadan is under the Alexandria competence even though a few kilometers distant from the capital. By the end of 2002 the Honorary Consulate of Port Said ceased its activities. The General Consulate of Italy is located in the Midan Saad Zagloul, 25,viewing the sea in an ancient building where the General Consul lives, not far from the Biblioteca Alexandrina. The Italian community amounts to 1000 persons, from whom 900 live in Alexandria (the others are in Port Said, Zagazig, Tanta, Damiette and Ismailya) The Italian emigration to Alexandria occurred in the 19th century with the beginning of the Italian Risorgimento, the successive repressions and the serious economic crisis of the century The Italian community attained considerable positions in numerous fields among which we have to mention: self-employment, commerce, constructions and local administrations. Between the two world wars, the emigration reached 4000 persons, but the events linked to the 2nd world war and the nationalization measures imposed in the sixties by the Egyptian government, reduced little by little the number. Beside the historical emigration, also exists a small but significant technological presence made of agents representing firms, companies, Italian institutes that participate in the activities for the development of Egypt; often using measures that are in favor of the presence of foreign capitals.
